HUMAN    (back to top)
Being the most numerous race in the world, Humans are renown for their ability to adjust and survive in any situation. They are a tough, hardened race, used to a harsh life. They have no real weaknesses in any field, yet do not excel in anything either; this leaves them to be an excellent all- round race. A normal Human can expect to meet kin all over the world, for the Human race seems to love war and has conquered vast areas of land in the past thousand years. Countless villages, towns and cities lie scattered around the globe, crowded with this quickly reproducing race. The roads are full of Human merchants who successfully sell anything to everyone. If you are a Human, you will not be alone.

ELF    (back to top)
These beautiful beings look similar to Humans, though far more comely. The typical Elves have golden hair, laughing blue eyes and pointed ears. Though they appear to be slight and somewhat fragile, they're more than capable in defending themselves and, as Elven armies are among the most feared in the entire world. The race is renown for its magical skills and its accompanying wisdom. Elven Mages are superior spellcasters, matched by few other races. Elves are constantly seeking to hone their skills and expand their knowledge, and their exceptionally long life span enables them to do so. Their homes are hidden in the ancient woods of Hesperia, where they were built thousands of years ago. Elves love wild nature, and live in total harmony with the woods and its inhabitants. It is in these woods that they create their music and participate in festivals by consuming delicious meals. Their own high level of civilization, makes them look down upon most other, lesser, races. Other races think of Elves mostly as haughty, self-concerned beings.

DWARF    (back to top)
Dwarfs are short, burly creatures, immediately recognizable by their thick hair and long beards. They have a natural affinity with the mountains and prefer to live in caverns and mines hewn from the rock. Dwarfs are expert stone-workers, and they are generally adept at all manner of industrial crafts, such as ironworking, making fine swords and manufacturing jewellery. Some Dwarfs live amongst Humans as metal-workers or craftsmen of some kind, and their work is highly prized. Physically, they are very resilient, quite strong and rather ugly. They are somewhat greedy, gruff, unfriendly, short- tempered and anti-social. They tolerate races that they have dealings with, but find races with 'too much ado about nothing' to be really annoying. They prefer blunt, rough weapons to butcher their enemies. Generally, Dwarfs make rather poor spellcasters.

HALFLING    (back to top)
Halflings are small and slight of frame but with rather rotund features and pot-bellies. They cannot grow beards and are shorter than Dwarfs, so the two races are easily told apart. Luckily for Halflings, they are larger than the Uyaite! Their hands and feet tend to be large and hairy and they prefer to go barefoot. They are not a very numerous people, living in a secluded part of the world, protected by the surrounding lands of Humans. Life for a young Halfling is often very boring and many seek adventure in the outside world. They're nimble-fingered and stealthy by nature, so they do make good Rogues. Halflings are extremely friendly and easy-going. They enjoy merry-making and especially eating. They are usually the first to suggest visiting an inn or stopping for a break.

UYAITE    (back to top)
The Uyaite are quite a rare race of little beings. Often they are confused with Confidants, or other magick beings. Legend tells of a small group of Elves being changed into Uyaite by Fletchez at the peak of The Creation.Fact is that these little winged beings -- most are only two feet tall -- literally sparkle with magickal energy. Their mastery in spellcasting even exceeds that of the Elves, though they will never boast about it. They live in a few tiny communities in the most ancient of woods and they try to be in harmony with nature, for they love purity. They are a kind folk, being nice to every creature of the forest. That is as long as creatures respect nature. They despise the vandalizing Goblinoids. One persistent tale has it that a tiny army of a hundred Uyaite once hunted down a vast army of Orcs and Goblins and left no survivors. However, those who know the Uyaite well will not believe this tale because of their extremely peaceful nature. They rarely venture outside their protected homes, which are well-masked by their illusionary spells. This is why people think the Uyaite exist only in faerie tales, since they have never seen them! On rare occasions, an adventurous Uyaite flees the village in search of a more exciting life. Such an event always adds to the colour of the rest of the world.

OGRE    (back to top)
Ogres are gross, ugly, big humanoids who love to fight and kill. They're known neither for their manners, nor for their intelligence, but everybody knows that messing with an Ogre is asking for trouble. Big muscles and the skin of a bull make an Ogre more than capable of 'dealing with food'. They are not an overly cruel race, but they tend to be brutal and have little respect for the weak or helpless. Ogres love eating above all other things, and they practically live for it. Their aggressive digestive system enables them to eat almost any animal or vegetable matter, and their terms for other races nearly always translate into food names. The Ogrish idioms concern food and eating mostly, and those Ogres who speak human tongues have the habit of translating these literally, which creates interesting problems of communication. Eating contests are very popular amongst Ogres, as a form of duel. The ultimate triumph for an Ogre is to win the contest by eating his opponent. Ogres are not difficult to talk into an adventurous life, just promise them large quantities of food.

GNOME    (back to top)
The Gnomes are the smaller relatives of Dwarfs, and they share a similar cultural background. They speak their own Dwarfish dialect. Characteristic features include bulbous noses, shaggy hair and beards. Gnomes tend to look weather-beaten and tanned. They are usually small, tough and strong. If anything, Gnomes are even more short-tempered and harder to get along with than Dwarfs are. Likewise, most of the time they live underground. They surely can be considered a subterranean race, and therefore suffer setbacks when fully exposed to sunlight. Gnomes are not as numerous as Dwarfs, although a number often decides to take up an adventuring life, even if this means missing their own comfortable stone tunnels. They tend to learn very quickly.

LIZARDMAN    (back to top)
Lizardmen are a race of bipedal humanoid reptiles varying in length from four and six feet. They're rather cold and devoid of emotion. They have tough, well-muscled arms and legs, thick necks and typical reptilian heads. Their tails are long and powerful weapons in their own right. Their bodies are covered in tough scales, which can be of almost any colour from dull browns to irridescent blues. They live in the deeper regions of natural cave systems, only emerging to raid and take captives where the lower levels of Dwarven or Goblin holds break through into these formations. They're a subterranean race, rarely seen out in the open except, on occasion, at night. The only recorded Lizardmen settlements have been small communities of no more than 50 individuals, with crude drystone huts in larger caverns. On the whole, they seem to move from place to place in semi-nomadic hunting parties. They are socially primitive, but quite capable of organizing themselves to fight or produce the few material items they need. Their society seems to be structured on the basis of age; the oldest individuals taking positions of command, while the strongest and most able are employed as temporary warchiefs or leaders of hunting parties. Some Lizardmen choose to flee this rather strict hierarchy.

GIANT    (back to top)
Giants look very much like Humans, but are far larger -- ranging between ten and twenty feet in height. Many Giants have very thin, spindly arms and legs, and most give the impression of being dim-witted and foolish. This is in no way deceptive. Their vast powers and stunning toughness, combined with an impressive health, result in formidable opponents. A few live in groups, but the larger ones live solitary or isolated lives, often amongst inaccessible mountains. They pose a serious threat to tra- vellers and the unwary, from whom they prefer to steal food -- or whom they may even consider to be food. Actually, the only opponents Ogres fear in a food contest are the Giants. Giants are known to join other races if promised proper rewards such as lots of food or a good, big mace (size of a tree) to smack enemies with. So it can happen that a Giant accompanies a band of adventurers, as long as he or she isn't too bored -- in which case they usually start eating people.

DRAGON    (back to top)
These winged quadrupeds tend to vary in almost all aspects of appearance. They can breathe fire, are protected by their scaly skin, and use their razor-sharp claws and dangerous tail in battle very efficiently. They are both formidable warriors as well as good spellcasters. In the beginning of times, before the Humans and other races conquered the lands, the Dragons were the masters of the forests and the mountain tops. Most Dragons were wise and good, but with the coming of other races to the world, and the War of Ages being waged, their numbers declined steadily as did their vitality. Most new races seemed to make a sport out of killing Dragons and their numbers dwindled. The few Dragons that still exist live in almost perpetual slumber within deep caverns amongst their ancestral nesting places in the peaks of the highest mountains. They grew old and tired. Few hatchlings have appeared within the last thousand years. Some have grown greedy or malicious, and jealously sit atop their amassed wealth. There is hope however, as sometimes new hatchlings seem to appear out of nothing. Wise men link this event to the coming of Earthlings which it seems to coincide with. Problem with these hatchlings is that it takes them a long time to mature. As all Dragons, they are strong, but develop slowly. If a hatchling survives its youth, no-one can match it as an adult.

MINOTAUR    (back to top)
Minotaurs are giant humans with the head of a bull. Their skin is dark, while their heads are usually black with off-white or yellowish horns. They have goatlike legs with coarse black hair. Eyes are normally red, while the exposed skin around the ears and muzzle may be grey or pinkish. Minotaurs are brutal fighters and enter a frenzied state in combat. Their lust for blood takes over during such fights and leaves them oblivious to danger or possible defeat. Despite these acts of savagery, Minotaurs can be quite rational. They tend to live solitary lives in the ancient woods of Hesperia, where they use their strength and surprising spatial insight to construct architectural masterpieces.

HALF ELF    (back to top)
Though few of the Hesperian races feel attraction towards each other, there has always been a strong human desire to be with one of the elder race and to possess their beauty. Thus came Half-Elves into existence, most beautiful among Humans, yet held in contempt by Wood Elves and High Elves alike. They are in everything a mix of their parents. Like Elves they tend to be wise and adept at spellcasting, and seek to expand their knowledge and hone their skills, even though almost none manage to master them to the extent Elves do. Their human background leaves them fairly adept at surviving outside of the ancient forests and more fit to explore the dominantly human world.

TROLL    (back to top)
Trolls are ugly, large creatures of well over ten feet tall. Although they appear skinny and comical, their twisted bodies are very strong, with heavy bones and sinews like ship's cables. Their skin is often of a dull brown or greenish tan. Trolls live for eating, and their digestive system is able to cope with almost anything. Indeed, it is said that a Troll is the only race that an Ogre will not challenge to an eating match. Their digestive juices are among the most powerful acids known in Hesperia. They even use them in battle to harm opponents. Though Trolls are quite stupid and live in small hunting packs in the Hesperian forests, at times a smart Troll will leave his pack and pursue an adventurous life. They aren't particularly adept at spellcasting, yet dangerous in combat if only for their regurgitation of acid and feared ability to regenerate wounds.
