Mud Progs:
Area writers are equipped with mud progs, which are smart tools that allow a writer to program intelligent or special behaviour of mobiles, objects and rooms to all sorts of situations. No longer can you take for granted that an opponent will just stand there and do nothing. For all you know, the opponent is powered with mud progs and ready to perform a few surprise actions. Mud progs also allow area writers to include a large number of small quests. An example of a mud prog is a mighty Wizard calling for her guards to aid her once you attack her, with the mud prog controlling the yelling for guards and consequent arrival of two guards. Or perhaps the random and brief appearance of a rare object on an altar deep inside the Black Fortress. If the player manages to get it before it disappears again, it will be a worthy addition to his or her gear, but how do you know if simply getting it won't trigger a number of guardian daemons to emerge from the scorched altar?
Behaviour:
Mud progs are one way to include intelligent and unpredictable behaviour of mobiles. There is however, also a more standardized way. On Hesperia, a mobiles can be assigned a standardized behavourial pattern. Now this is included in most muds, however we expanded and rationalized the amount and intelligence of the patterns to a large extent. It will take you long to find out exactly how you can expect a certain pattern on a mobile to react and even then you may be surprised by the conspiring of two patterns at once or the occasional mud prog.
Safety Net:
If the mud crashes, a safety net is activated, copying over all relevant details to a backup file. After the copyover is completed, an automatic reboot is performed and your character is automatically relogged. The whole procedure takes about 40-60 seconds, during which you only have to lean back and be patient. When relogged, you will find everything to be just as before the crash. Groups will still be intact, objects and corpses still around, et cetera. If the server is ever down for an extended period of time, or the copyover fails for one reason or another, you may have a serious problem. After all if you died just before the crash, your corpse and all your belongings will be lost in that case. Don't worry. In addition to the copyover safety net, Immortals can REIMBURSE your corpse and your belongings with it, up to three deaths ago, if you can prove the loss to be due to a crash. If even this fails, we can always do a manual reimburse.
